The 46 year-old spent two seasons with Diego Maradona at Barcelona, who, then in his role as vice-president of the club, offered the job to Schuster.
“They called me, Maradona and his colleagues to go over there within two days, because the league has already begun and decisions have to be made. The offer was very interesting from a sporting perspective, but it wasn’t the right moment. It was in the middle of pre-season and I had to decide in only two days.
Schuster has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave should a big club come in for him, and praised chairman Angel Torres for permitting him to talk with the Argentinian champions. “[Torres] was so good with me and opened the door for me. I have a personal agreement with this club that treats me so well. I couldnt leave right now and with this team we have built.” |
