A freekick by Steven Gerrard gave Liverpool a 2-1 win over Aston Villa whilst new boys Sunderland beat Tottenham in with the last kick of the game. Fellow newcomers Derby drew with Portsmouth. Blackburn Rovers come from behind to beat Middlesborough 2-1 with Everton beating Wigan by the same score.
