Delaney forced to retire

The 31-year-old Welsh international has not played a game for almost a year. In the meantime he has been treated by legendary footballing doctor Richard Steadman but not even he could save the defender's career.

In his statement Delaney thanked everyone to do with Villa who have supported him throughout his injury and in his eight and a half seasons at the club. Delaney gave plaudits to new manager Martin O'Neill who never gave up faith in him and was always willing to give hom his chance. Delaney's ambitions now is to get into coaching
