Cowling takes Colchester chair

Colchester owner Robbie Cowling has taken over as chairman at Layer Road after Peter Heard's decision to step down.

Heard has announced his retirement after nine years at the helm and has accepted the role of club president.

Local businessman Cowling took over Heard's controlling shareholding in September 2006 and played a major role in bringing veteran striker Teddy Sheringham to the Coca-Cola Championship club earlier this week.

"Peter has left the club in a far better financial position than how he found it," said Cowling.

"I promise, in my new role as chairman, to do my best to continue his legacy in running the club in the same manner and to carry on taking the club forward."
