Shrimpers reject Tykes bid

Southend have rejected a £250,000 bid from Championship side Barnsley for winger Jamal Campbell-Ryce.

Tykes boss Simon Davey, whose team pipped Southend to survival in the Championship last season, wants to add some width to his ranks and has put Jamaican international Campbell-Ryce at the top of his shopping list.

The 24-year-old former Rotherham winger has also been linked with Leicester and Coventry over the summer.

Meanwhile, Davey was pleased with his side's performance against Wigan on Tuesday, despite losing 2-0 to the Barclays Premier League team.

Jason Koumas and Denny Landzaat were on target for the Latics, but Davey was not at all concerned with the result and preferred rather to focus on the way his side adapted at Oakwell.

The Reds boss told the club's official website: "It was a good run out for the lads and things are starting to take shape. The new lads are starting to settle in well although they still need some time and a little work on the training ground. Overall I was very pleased with how they did and it is another step towards the first game."
