Hilario could be the keeper for Barca vs Chelsea game

Quote:
LONDON (Reuters) - Chelsea, whose two goalkeepers were knocked unconscious on Saturday, may have to field third-choice Portuguese Hilario in their biggest game of the season so far against Barcelona on Wednesday.

Chelsea's Premier League game against Reading had barely started before Petr Cech had to be carried off after a sliding Stephen Hunt caught the Czech keeper in the head with his knee.

Manager Jose Mourinho said Cech was lucky to be alive.

He called on the FA to investigate Hunt's challenge. "To be angry doesn't help. I'm just waiting...what the FA will do about it," he said.

Cech's Italian substitute Carlo Cudicini clattered to the ground after colliding with Reading's Ibrahima Sonko in injury time and was carried off with his neck braced.

Chelsea held on to win 1-0 with captain John Terry in goal.

Ambulances took both concussed keepers to hospital and Cech was kept in overnight. Cudicini was discharged after treatment.

The English champions face Spanish and European title holders Barcelona at home for the third season in a row on Wednesday in the Champions League's most high-profile group game.

Hilario, 31 next Saturday, joined Chelsea on a free transfer last June from Portuguese side Nacional.

He was a Porto youth product and worked with Mourinho during his successful UEFA Cup and Champions League winning spell there but rarely made the first team, playing second fiddle to Vitor Baia.

He has yet to make an appearance for Chelsea's first team.

When Mourinho signed his lofty 1.89 metre compatriot, the Chelsea manager said:

"Hilario is everything we need," and the keeper replied that he intended to work hard and make squad selection difficult for his manager. "I want to complicate his life," he said.
I think with Hilarion in goal, Barcelona can have thier rivalry solved easily this time.
One more thing, Terry done very well though between the posts in the Reading game.
Anyway, Chelsea just have bad luck in goalkeeping problems last Saturday.

I do find it rather ironic. They have all these millions of pounds at their disposal. And they have this theory of two world class players in every position. Yet this happens.

Horrible luck on their behalf. But i do have a evil smile on my face.

Cech today had surgery on a skull fracture. So he is out. Cudicini was discharged last night so he will be who Chelski will be banking on.

he will try his best but he must pray well before the game not to get too much shot from Barca.

You know, Barca is a strong attacking team.

Hilario conceeded 10 goals in three games in pre-season, but i think he'll do us proud (i hope). Cuducini apparently wont play due to swallowing his toungue. Nasty!

if the rest of the squad plays properly, a third-choice goalkeeper guarding the net doesn't really become too much of a problem.

But you must first look back to past encounters between Chelsea and Barcelona. Chelsea may arguably owned the best defence but they always concede many against Barca and this time with Hilario...just imagine.

I read that Cudicini will be out for about 2 weeks. I would be surprised if you see hoim against Barca. As for predictions, better just toss that coin it could go either way.

huh? I'm telling you, if you don't believe me, ask Matt, he was a good prospect for awhile and then one bad performance in Champions League and that was it. he was right up there with he-who-plays-for-the-rival-of-his-childhood-favorite-team, and oops-I-failed-a-drug-test-just-in-time-for-international-competition, I mean hes now not regarded as such, but I think that he is better then peopel realize, if he just gets more consistent. Better then Robinson? For sure.

Hilario didn't...if thats wot you mean, Quim did...in 2002 right before the WC...I guess the comparison doesn't make sense to most, made sense to me at the time.

anyway: what did I say...1-0 Chelsea wins, Hilario is the man.
