Blackburn comeback win 2-1 over Wisla Krakow

Quote:
A second-half comeback gave Blackburn a 2-1 win away to Wisla Krakow and got their UEFA Cup group-stage campaign off to a flying start.

They trailed at the break thanks to a fortunate goal credited to Roberto Cantoro - his driven shot took a huge deflection off Tugay to leave keeper Brad Friedel stranded.

Rovers must have felt aggreived to be behind at the interval - Morten Gamst Pedersen should have put them ahead at 0-0, while shortly after the goal Shabani Nonda shot inches wide.

However, they soon set about retrieving the situation and levelled 11 minutes into the second half.

Savage rose to head home Bentley's fine cross from the right to make it 1-1.

Both sides tried to win the game in the closing stages, but it was Blackburn who grabbed the winner in the 90th minute.

Substitute Jason Roberts and Benni McCarthy both had shots well saved in the same move before Bentley finally found the net from the second rebound.
Without doubt, Blackburn played very well. Bentley was very impressive today, assist and scored one. Trying to impress McLaren perhaps.

I think Mark Hughes must be given credit for this achievement.
His performance in the transfer market this season was very good, brought in some qualities like Benni Mac, which blend into the squad very well.

I think if he continue to play well, I think he will. Since McLaren is still trying a few experiments now on players, he will get it if he continue to impress.

A event to spoil this game:

Quote:
Blackburn are to contact UEFA after alleging that striker Benni McCarthy was racially abused during the win over Wisla Krakow.

The 28-year-old South African was so incensed by what he considered intolerable abuse that he squared up to Serbian defender Nikola Mijailovic after a 2-1 victory in Poland.

The row overshadowed a stirring performance by Blackburn on foreign soil in their opening UEFA Cup Group game.

Manager Mark Hughes said: "Benni was upset because a number of comments were made to him during the game.

"They were of a racist nature. We will speak to UEFA and make it clear to them who we think was involved.

"I will speak to the UEFA delegate at some stage to make our point.

"It's unfortunate something like this will tend to overshadow a great performance."
Why can't racists chants stop? Insulting an opponent is truly not a gentleman's way...

Great result for Hughes and his team but the comments from the Kravow players do leave a bad taste in the mouth. It is time to stamp this out of football.

I agree I thought Hughes should have been manager of the year last season as he did the best job with the resources available to him.

I would probobly agree on that. I think he's a good bet to be the next man u manager. MArtin O'Neill is probobly still the favourite but you'd get better odds on Hughes.

What's the point of racism? It's not that black people can't play football!
Total nonsense here. I hate racism though.

Wisla Krakow defender Nikola Mijailovic has been banned for 5 Uefa matches after being found guilty of racially abusing Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy, Mijailovic who still protests his inocence has until monday to appeal.
Good to see UEFA acting quickly and decisevly for a change.
