vCash: 480 | Wednesday crushed by Colchester Colchester crushed Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 to leave the Owls in the Championship bottom three. Jamie Cureton claimed the 150th league goal of his career to hand Colchester a slender half-time advantage at Layer Road. Cureton slotted home from 12 yards after good play by Greg Halford in the 28th minute to end his four-game goal drought and register his fifth of the season. Wednesday, lying out of the bottom three on goal difference, have never won at Layer Road and failed to test Colchester goalkeeper Aidan Davison despite creating some good openings. Colchester made them pay when Greg Halford scored a 30-yard screamer in the 56th minute to double his sides advantage and Chris Iwelumo also netted with a shot from 20 yards five minutes later. Karl Duguid completed a miserable night for the Owls by scoring a fourth seven minutes from time after being set-up by Kevin Watson, who was celebrating his 100th league appearance for the club. The home side made an encouraging start and Richard Garcia tested on-loan Middlesbrough goalkeeper Brad Jones within 60 seconds. Wednesday, with just one away win this season, responded and Yoann Folly fired an effort wide from 18 yards in the 14th minute. But Cureton broke the deadlock with his landmark strike and Duguid nearly added a second two minutes later, only to be denied by Jones. Wednesday last defeated Colchester in February 1980 and they struggled to create too many opportunities. When they did, Frank Simek was forced to shoot from distance, his 25-yard effort sailing over the crossbar. Despite seeing their six-game unbeaten run come to an end at Wolves on Saturday, Colchester showed plenty of confidence and came close to doubling their lead a minute before the break. Cureton swung over a cross to Duguid, who was again foiled by Jones. Another chance fell to Duguid within 60 seconds of the restart, this time his shot from the edge of the box went wide. Wednesday wasted an opening five minutes later when Marcus Tudgay was off target with his 18-yard effort and Steven MacLean was also guilty of testing Colchester goalkeeper Aidan Davison. The visitors were punished in the 56th minute when Halford produced a stunning strike from 30 yards and Iwelumo added a third five minutes later. It prompted Owls manager Paul Sturrock to make a triple substitution but Colchester continued to create opportunities and Cureton fired a shot wide from 18 yards before Jones twice saved headers from Iwelumo. Once again Wednesdays finishing was wild and substitute Drew Talbot was the next player to shoot wide while Kemal Izzet was also off target at the other end as Colchester searched for a fourth. Duguid had the final say to pile more pressure on Sturrock. |
