Wednesday expected to name Laws as new manager

Sheffield Wednesday have settled on Brian Laws as their replacement for Paul Sturrock, who will return to management with Swindon Town.

The Hillsborough board have opened compensation talks with Scunthorpe to make Laws their new boss after a fortnight of intrigue since Sturrock was axed.

Laws is expected to be unveiled early next weekat around the time Sturrock is paraded by Swindon as their successor to new Leeds boss Dennis Wise.

But the Owls have yet to agree a deal with Scunthorpe, who will keep their man in charge at Huddersfield on Saturday, while Sean McAuley signs off as caretaker boss by staying at the helm for the visit of Leicester.

Wednesdays job search has taken in names like Gary Megson and Bryan Robson, who despite inaccurate suggestions that he had priced himself out of the job is still in the frame should talks with Laws fail.

But chairman Dave Allen is convinced Laws is the right man, having been a player under Brian Clough at Nottingham Forest.

The 45-year-old has amassed more than 600 games as a manager since becoming player/boss of Grimsby 12 years ago and has helped Scunthorpe punch above their weight in nine years at Glanford Park.
