how does the playoff system work for the final promotion spot?

I know Sunderland and Birmingham are promoted for next season, but a 3rd team will be promoted via a "playoff" system. What is this playoff system? who is eligble for the playoff? what's the standings/outcome so far of it?

never really paid attention to the championship or lower leagues in england so not sure...

The teams that finish 3rd to 6th go into the play-offs

There are 2 semi finals played over 2 legs 3rd v 6th & 4thv 5th ,the winners of those ties go into a final which this year will be at Wembely

Historicaly the team that finishes 3rd is hardly ever promoted usualy it's a team that sneaks into 6th place at the last minute that goes up.
