Thuram says Juve right to be demoted

Former Juventus defender Lilian Thuram insists there was no alternative but to relegate the club following the Calciopoli revelations. The new Barcelona man was one of the first players to leave the Turin club – along with Gianluca Zambrotta – after their demotion was confirmed, a sentence which he expected.

“The Calciopoli scandal? I don’t really think that the sporting justice could have done anything different,” said the 34-year-old Frenchman. “The judges had to be severe and I didn’t really expect a different verdict,” continued the former Parma ace.

Thuram was just as frank when speaking about Zinedine Zidane’s infamous head-butt on Marco Materazzi during the World Cup Final. “Zidane was wrong to react like that and I must admit it wasn’t the first time I saw him do so,” he noted. “I believe that Materazzi provoked him, but Zidane should have never acted as he did. He was totally wrong.”

He couldn't really have been expected to play out the final year or so of his career in Serie B. It isn't really surprising that he moved so quickly after news of the scandal broke out.
