Porto start title defence with win

Champions Porto started their title defence with a 2-1 home win over Uniao Leiria on Friday.

Porto, coached by Jesualdo Ferreira who replaced Dutchman Co Adriaanse, opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Brazilian striker Adriano headed home inside area after great work from Moroccan winger Tarik Sektioui on the left.

Winger Ricardo Quaresma doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time with a shot inside box. Uniao Leiria pulled a goal back through Senegalese striker Moddou Sougout after 68 minutes.

Porto dropped their first points of the season yesterday going down 2-1 at Sporting Braga, Sporting Lisbon drew level at the top on 12 points after a 2-0home victory over União Leiria.
The mighty Naval are third on 10 points following a 2-1 home win over Beira Mar on friday night.

No your thinking of another player with the same or similar name I think,
Ricardo Quaresma started his career with Sporting went to Barcelona where he failed to make an impact and then returned to Porto,( he was a make weight in the deal that brought Deco to the neu camp.)

They won't defend it, don't worry. They will crack or choke somehow.

To be honest Naval will be lucky to avoid relegation,Portuguese football is dominated to such an extent by the big three that is is hard to imagine that anyone else can end up as champions , we can but hope.
I suppose the team with the best chance of beating them would be Braga or maybe Boavista but I'm afraid the likelyhood is it will be the same top 3 as always the only doubt is the order in which they will finish.
The current table after 5 matches:
1.Porto 12 pts,2.Sporting 12pts, 3. NAVAL 1º DE MAIO 10pts,4.Sp Braga 10 pts, 5.P.Ferreira 8pts, 6.Boavista 7pts, 7.U.Leira 7pts, 8.Marítimo 7pts, 9.Benfica 7pts, 10.Nacional 6pts, 11.Belenenses 5pts, 12.Beira-Mar 5pts,13.V.Setúbal 5pts, 14.Académica 3pts, 15.Desp.Aves 2pts, 16.E.Amadora 1pt.

Early days yet, Naval are the lowest budget team in a low budget league ,our average crowd is about 800, last season was our first ever in the top division of Portuguese football and we survived by the skin of our teeth so staying up for us is a real achivement.
By the way I didn't miss a zero our average crowd realy is about eight hundred!
