Portugal given till the 14th September to sort out theitr legal row

FIFA has given Portugals soccer federation until September 14 to resolve a legal row over club Gil Vicente which has disrupted the start of the countrys Premier League season, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said on Monday. According to the FPF Web site, FIFA had decided to hold a meeting of its emergency committee to consider suspending the FPF from all international tournaments if there was no resolution by September 14.

This situation not only weakens soccer as well as affecting the integrity of competitions, the Portuguese federation cited FIFA as saying. There was nobody immediately available for comment from FIFA when contacted by Reuters. The row started earlier this month with the relegation of Gil Vicente from the Premier League after they used an ineligible player, Mateus.

The small club with 5,500 members challenged the suspension of the Angolan player in a civil court, contravening league and FIFA rules. FPF head Gilberto Madail travelled to Zurich with two federation legal advisors last week to meet FIFA officials in an attempt to resolve the dispute. FIFA said the situation had to be resolved in such a way that the legal soccer organs are respected, in Portugal, according to the Portuguese federation.

The Portuguese federation said it was also considering invoking a special measure in the public interest which would annul the civil courts decision - a move which would allow league games to return to normal. The federation said it hoped such a move could avoid a suspension by FIFA, leaving only Gil Vicente to deal with the consequence of their decision to bypass league rules by going to the civil court. Gil Vicente, based in the north of Portugal, are holding a general assembly on Thursday to decide whether to withdraw or maintain their appeal in the civil court. Gil were relegated to the second division last season and replaced by Belenenses.

There doesn't seem to be a hell of a lot of corruption in this tale.

the Benfica statement is a backhanded compliment. As for the first part, it's the Latin countries who are currently in news for corruption scandals. Granted, we are by no means whiter than white ( probably just better at not getting caught) but this isn't the first major corruption scandal to hit Italian domestic football. Spanish referees were under scrutiny recently as well, if memory serves me right

lets be honest they are all at. Some English coaches are being investigated for taking bungs from agents of certain players. Like any big business there will always be greedy b***ards in football.

Grobellaar and Fashanu spring to mind straight away.

Then you look at Horse Racing, now there is real corruption in there. Any business that can generate profit will always have these underhand individuals.

Yeah, not sure what happened there as it's now the 28th , Gil are still going through the courts and are still refusing to fulfill their fixtures yet Portuguese teams have not been banned from international competition.

Gil Vicente have announced today that they are droping their legal battle and they will face Rio Ave in the Liga da Honra on sunday.
They have missed the first 4 matches of the season for which they have been fined and all the games were awarded 3-0 to the opposition.

I bet they will pick it up again as soon as FIFA isn't threatening the national team with bans. As much as I don't want to say this, I don't think it would make much of a difference if Porto and Benfica are banned from champions league.

You are right or at least I was wrong before they have started playing but they haven't stopped the legal action so I don't know why the Portuguese teams have not been banned, Juventus must be gutted.
Incidentaly Gil lost 1-0 TO Rio Ave on Sunday.

Well the clubs arent making any difference. If they get the national team banned with their legal issues they better plan on moving to Spain.
at Juve.

They would have the same problem as the Old Firm if they moved to England in Portugal FCP,SLB & SCP are the " três grandes " in Spain they'd just be 3 other teams.

yeah, but there are only two teams in Spain. "dos putos" and I don't follow the rest. All I know is that the only person they are allowed to hurt with their legal problems are themselves, otherwise they will answer to something higher then the law.
