vCash: 500 | Serie A preview Empoli are preparing to welcome Serie A leaders Palermo to their Carlo Castellani Stadium on Sunday. Along with AC Milan, the Sicilians are the only team to have a 100% record after their first three games of the season, but while the Rossoneri remain eight points adrift owing to their pre-season points deduction, Francesco Guidolin's side lead the way in Italy. They have impressed in every game they have played this campaign, including a 5-3 triumph in the Sicilian derby with Catania on Wednesday night, while also seeing off West Ham United in the UEFA Cup last week. However, talk of the title is premature, according to Guidolin. "Between the side which won Serie A last season and Palermo, there was a difference of twice as many points," he said. "That gap certainly cannot be overturned in just one year." Yet his side is disproving him in every game and Empoli, who drew with Atalanta in midweek, could be the next side to be brushed aside. Inter Milan are waiting in the wings to assume their role as title favourites after overcoming the challenge of Roma on Wednesday. A Hernan Crespo goal was enough to lift the pressure from coach Roberto Mancini, whose side host Chievo on Sunday ahead of a crucial few days for the Nerazzurri. They also face Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday. AC Milan are another side in Champions League action this week, but after a 3-0 win over AEK Athens and a perfect start to the season, there has never been any pressure on coach Carlo Ancelotti. In Livorno on Saturday, his team will be looking for a fourth straight win to move within five points of the league leaders. After a summer in which they were initially scrapped of a place in Europe, only to be reinstated and docked eight Serie A points, the club are back in the black after a 1-0 win over Ascoli on Wednesday. Saturday's other fixture sees Messina make the short trip to Catania. The Sicilian Serie A newcomers suffered defeat for the first time on Wednesday night at the hands of Palermo, but they will still regard their start to the season as a positive one if they can beat Messina. On Sunday, Roma need to bounce back from their first defeat of the season with a trip to Parma, while Fiorentina will look to build on their first win of the season at Udinese. Sampdoria felt the sting of Udinese in a frenetic 45 minutes on Wednesday night, but staged a remarkable comeback to draw 3-3 after trailing by three goals. That still was not enough to end a run of what is now 15 games without a win, and Walter Novellino's side will be looking to finally put the record straight in Ascoli on Sunday. New Torino coach Alberto Zaccheroni is looking for his first win in charge and takes his side to Reggina while Siena, who became the latest side to inflict defeat on the Turinese, host Cagliari, who earned their first point of the season in midweek. Finally, Lazio, fresh from their first win of the campaign, entertain Atalanta. |
