Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich were knocked off the top of the table on Saturday with a shock 1-0 defeat at VfL Wolfsburg. The humiliating defeat against the team that started the game in bottom place sent Bayern down to fourth with a modest 10 points from six matches even though they had won convincingly at Inter Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Germany striker Mike Hanke broke free on the left and tapped in a short pass from Cedrick Makiadi in the 36th minute for the match winner, giving Wolfsburg their first victory of the season and lifting them up to 14th place. It was Hankes first goal in seven months and only the third victory in 23 matches under beleaguered Wolfsburg coach Klaus Augenthaler.

Bayern, who won 2-0 at Inter Milan to take control of Group B in the Champions League three days earlier, struggled most of the match before 30,000 at the Volkswagen Arena against a team that had not won in their previous eight games. "We werent fresh enough to come away with any points here," said Bayern captain Oliver Kahn, who had warned his team mates against taking Wolfsburg lightly after the win in Italy. A Kahn blunder in the eighth minute almost gave Hanke an early goal.

"It looks like some of us thought they were the greatest after that," Kahn added. "But to be a great team you also have to win at Wolfsburg. We should have won here. They beat us but will probably lose their next five matches." Bayern had a number of chances in the first half. But Hasan Salihamidzic, Claudio Pizarro, Lucio and Bastian Schweinsteiger just missed the target or were denied by Wolfsburgs outstanding goalkeeper Simon Jentzsch.

Bayern were especially disappointing in the final 20 minutes, a phase when the fittest team in the league have usually proven to be especially lethal with many last-gasp wins. This time they mounted no serious threat. Coach Felix Magath said: "We lack the necessary harmony and means to break down a team that plays as defensively as Wolfsburg did. We made it easy for them." Off to one of their worst starts, Bayern dropped to fourth with three wins, a draw and two defeats. Werder Bremen, who crushed Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-0 after drawing 1-1 against Barcelona in midweek, climbed to second, also on 10 points.

Nuremberg moved back into first place, ahead of Bremen, Schalke and Bayern on goal difference, with 10 points from six matches after drawing 1-1 against Mainz. Jan Polak put Nuremberg ahead in the 24th minute but Robert Vittek missed a penalty four minutes later, they had Jawher Mnari sent off before halftime and conceded an equaliser to Christoph Babatz five minutes from the end. Schalke and Hertha Berlin, in fifth place with nine points, have chances to move into first place if they win on Sunday at Bayer Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart.
