vCash: 480 | Sporting go joint top Sporting went joint top on points at the head of the Portuguese Premier League with a 1-0 win at Estrela Amadora on Sunday. Sporting, warming up for their Champions League match with Bayern Munich on Wednesday, have 15 points from six games, the same as leaders Porto who have a superior goal difference. Sporting grabbed the only goal when defender Tonel headed in a corner by midfielder Joao Moutinho on the stroke of halftime. Champions Porto defeated Maritimo 3-0 at home on Saturday with striker Helder Postiga scoring twice. Braga, who won 3-0 at promoted Beira Mar on Friday are third two points behind. Two first-half goals by Italian forward Fabrizio Miccoli helped Benfica crush promoted Uniao Leiria 4-0 on Saturday. They are in fourth place with 10 points, five behind the leaders but with one match in hand. |

The Portuguese press today is suggesting Benfica will play with 3 upfront ,Miccoli , Nuno Gomes and Simão . Miccoli is a dangerous striker ,Nuno Gomes is a trier who leads the line well but is not a prolific scorer, Simão can be brilliant but he can also be annonimous but is very dangerous from set pieces. Benfica are pretty solid at the back and I think Petit is going to sit infront of the back four so they will be difficult to break down I think they are scared of the likely intimidating atmosphere at Celtic Park. I take Celtic to win a tight game 1-0.

Portuguese football is all about 3 teams.Benfica alone are supported my about 60% of the population with the other 40% divided fairly evenly between Sporting and Porto nobody else realy counts. But such as it is there is a second tier of teams which consists of Boavista,Belenenses, Braga,Vitoria Setúbal, Marítimo, Académica ,União Leiria amongst others. Naval are probably on a par with Paços de Ferreira and Desportivo Aves as the poorest of the poor in the Superliga at the present so to be where they are is a minor miracle I suspect they will probably finish around 10th. Benfica's team bus is worth more than the Naval team.

vCash: 500 | sounds like greek football. I didn't realise benfica commanded such a large proportion of supporters. I know everyone says this about their teams' ground but the atmosphere at parkhead on Euro nights really is something. Totally deafening. The design of the stadium contributes to this also. I think we can sneak it but it's our defence i'm worried about. They aren't the quickest. But i know Benfica will come to win so it should be an open game |

You have the Superliga followed by the Liga da Honra followed by the Segunda Divisão then local leagues. 20 years ago Naval were playing in the local leagues they got into the liga da Honra for the first time just 8 years ago and into the superliga for the first time just last season.

If Benfica sacked their coach and the President of Portugal was assasinated on the same day the assassination would be the second item on the evening news.
