Bremen thrash Mainz

Miroslav Klose and Aaron Hunt scored two goals apiece to help Bundesliga leaders Werder Bremen to a 6-1 rout at Mainz on Friday. Werder made their customary blazing start and were 3-0 up by the 21st minute thanks to the devastating Klose-Hunt combination. Klose scored the first and third from Hunt assists; Hunt got the second from Kloses unselfish pass. Mainz got a consolation with a fine free kick from Mimoun Azaouagh in the 74th minute but Hunt nipped in ahead of Klose to restore the three-goal lead just a minute later.

Naldo headed in the fifth with 10 minutes to go and fellow Brazilian Diego deflected a sixth a minute from time. Victory took Werder three points clear at the top of the Bundesliga table, with 19 points from nine matches. Schalke 04, in second on 16 points, will pull back level if they win away to VfB Stuttgart on Sunday. The result puts further pressure on champions Bayern Munich. Bayern are in fourth place on 13 points and will need to win at home to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday to climb back to within three points of the leaders.

Hunt, a 20-year-old German striker who looks destined for great things, caused continual problems for the Mainz defence in his role just behind Klose. Klose took Hunts pass through the middle, beat two defenders and slotted in for the opener in the 12th minute. The German international striker returned the favour in the 20th minute, squaring the ball for Hunt to tap into an empty net. It was 3-0 just 30 seconds later as the same two players combined again. Hunt took the ball in from the right and pulled it back for Klose, arriving late, to sweep in from 10 metres.

Azaouaghs free kick from 20 metres threatened to spark a Mainz comeback before Hunt reacted quickly to tap in after the keeper had saved from Klose. Goals from Brazilian duo Naldo and Diego took Werders scoring tally to 18 in the last four league games.
