Liga Portuguesa 07/08

Week 1 Results

Sporting 4-1 Académica
Braga 1-2 F.C.Porto
Leixões 1-1 Benfica
Maritímo 3-1 Paços de Ferreira
Nacional 0-0 Estrela Amadora
V.Guimarães 1-1 V.Setúbal
União Leiria 0-0 Boavista
Naval 1-1 Belenenses.

Benfica sacked head coach Fernando Santos just 1 game into the season after a disappointing draw with newly promoted Leixões , tbh I was suprised that he wasn't sacked at the end of last season as a trophyless campaign usualy means curtains for an SLB coach , but to sack the man after just one league game does seem very strange. He has been replaced by José António Camacho who coached Benfica with little success between 2002 & 2004 before resigning to take over at Real Madrid ,where he resigned after a brief disasterous few months in charge.

Sporting who are most experts favourites for the title this year started their campaign with a comfortable 4-1 win over Académica de Coimbra , champions Porto survived a difficult trip to Braga ( the 4th best team in Portugal ) thanks to 2 stunning Ricardo Quaresma free kicks

Porto take on Sporting at the Estádio de Dragão on saturday in the 2nd round of matches

Naval started the season with a 1-1 draw against Belenenses on Monday night , it was a fairly encouraging performance , before the game I would have been happy with a draw but in the end I was disappointed that we didn't win , we desperately need a stiker who knows where the goal is otherwise it's going to be a long hard season.

Porto beat Sporting 1-0 in the first Classico of the season , Marítimo are the only other team with 2 wins from 2 after they beat Boavista 2-0

Benfica's woes continue despite the new coach, they drew 0-0 at home against Vitória Giumarães in another very disappointing performance.

Naval lost 3-1 at Estrela Amadora despite contolling most of the match , they lost for 2 reasons first the keeper Taborda ( who is usually very reliable ) had a mare and second the tactical ineptitude of coach Francisco Chaló.

Champions Porto made it 3 wins from 3 with a comfortable 3-0 win against União Leiria , Marítimo are the only other team with maximum points after a 2-0 win against Académica

Pre season favourites Sporting struggled to an unconvincing 1-0 win over Belenenses , whilst Benfica got their first win of the season 3-0 against Nacional in Madeira.

All too easy for Porto , they made it 5 from 5 with a comfortable 2-0 win at Pacos Ferreira , whilst Sporting & Benfica lost further ground as they both drew , closets challengers at the moment are Maritimo who made it 4 wins from 5 with a 2-0 win over Belenenses

Top of the table
1st Porto 15 pts, 2nd Maritimo 12, 3rd Sporting 10 , 4th Benfica 9
