PSV Eindhoven skipper Andre Ooijer has admitted he wants to join Blackburn Rovers after failing to agree a new contract at the Philips Stadion. The 31-year-old defender, who is also a target of Portsmouth, is out of contract next summer and Blackburn are set to table a £1million bid as PSV look to cash in on the Holland international.

Blackburn manager Mark Hughes has revealed he hopes to conclude a deal to sign Andre Ooijer in the next 24 hours.

Hughes has long been on the trial of the Dutch international defender and Ooijer recently stated his determination to move to Ewood Park.

However Rovers and Ooijer have been agitated by PSV Eindhoven's demands for a sizeable transfer fee, with the Dutch giants having already turned down two separate bids from Hughes's side.

Reports in Holland, though, suggest the two clubs are now close to concurring on a deal worth €3 million (£2 million).

"Both sides are close to each other," PSV chairman Rob Westerhof told De Telegraaf.

Hughes may now hope to complete a deal in time for the player to make his debut against Everton on Wednesday, particularly given Rovers' threadbare resources at the back.

"We have made a number of increased offers for Ooijer," said Hughes.

"The situation is very much in PSV's hands but hopefully something will happen in the next 24 hours.

"We have been looking to add to our central defensive options all this summer.

"This current scenario has dragged on longer than anticipated but hopefully will reach a positive conclusion.

"Ooijer has great experience. He has played at the highest level and would be a real asset for us."

Hughes is also hopeful of a successful appeal against Andy Todd's dismissal against Pompey.

"We've got a few numbers down, obviously Ryan Nelsen's not had any football during pre-season, Zurab [Khizanishvili] we missed at the weekend," Hughes told Sky Sports News.

"Lucas Neill's going to miss the game through suspension so we're a little bit thin on the ground but hopefully we can get Andy's decision turned round."

The Premiership club have spent several weeks chasing the Holland international and had already had two offers rejected.

Ooijer will now have the chance to discuss a move to Ewood Park after publicly stating his desire to join Hughes' side.

The stopper has made himself unavailable to play for PSV during the period he has been hankering after a switch to England.

The Dutch champions responded by banning Ooijer from training, but a suitable solution for all parties is now close to being finalised.

After much haggling led to a dispute between the player and his Dutch employers, a fee in the region of €3 million (£2 million) was agreed between the two clubs on Tuesday afternoon.

The 32-year-old, who had earlier this month intimated a strong desire to join the Premiership club, then travelled to Lancashire in the evening and, after passing a medical, has put pen-to-paper on a two-year contract, with the option of a third year.

Ooijer's versatility was much coveted by manager Mark Hughes, with the World Cup star able to operate in central defence and at right back.

Ooijer becomes Hughes's fifth summer signing, following Jason Brown, Francis Jeffers, Jason Roberts and Benni McCarthy into the Ewood Park club, and will be available to make his debut against Chelsea on Sunday.
