Norwich City manager Glenn Roeder has confirmed Birmingham City will listen to offers for defender Martin Taylor, after speaking to new Blues boss Alex McLeish.

The 28-year-old central defender looks set to leave St Andrews after the former Scotland manager told Taylor he was unlikely to figure in his long-term plans.

All of which leaves Roeder hoping to persuade Taylor to extend his stay at Carrow Road beyond tomorrow's game against Sheffield United - the last under his original loan agreement.

“I'm going to sit down and talk to him after training today,” said Roeder. “I've had a chat with Alex McLeish, and I know [Taylor] spoke to McLeish yesterday at the training ground. I think he gave him an indication that they are prepared to listen to offers and he didn't have a big future at Birmingham, so they wouldn't stand in his way if he could get fixed up as such. So that was encouraging for us when I talk to Martin this afternoon.”

“At the moment I would like us to be able to extend the loan to January 1, then that would buy us some time to then talk about anything more permanent thereafter.”

The Canaries are expected to have competition for Taylor's signature, with two other Championship sides registering their interest with Birmingham since the defender made such a positive impact at Carrow Road after signing at the start of November.

“I think that he's certainly enjoyed being at the club and certainly enjoys the environment. I have a feeling one of the other clubs is in London and knowing Martin Taylor like I do he would have no interest in living in London. So he's a pretty good judge.

“I'm from London, but there's nothing in London that would want me to live there!”

Roeder added: “After he's played on Saturday, if we don't have an agreement, we have a few days after, on Monday or Tuesday. It's not as if once he comes off the field he goes straight back.

“This afternoon will be important to have a good chat with him and come out of those talks feeling positive about him staying longer. We certainly need him to. He's done really well and has played an important part in the three wins and did everything he could in his own performance when we lost against Stoke.

“We are so short in that department we badly need him to stay as well.”
