Leicester fork out £2.1m to sign DJ Campbell

Campbell becomes the Foxes' 12th signing of a busy summer and is reunited with Martin Allen, his former manager at Brentford, at the Walkers Stadium.

The 25-year-old is the third player to move from St Andrews to Leicester this summer, following Bruno N'Gotty and Stephen Clemence.

Campbell scored 12 goals last season to help the Blues win promotion back to the top flight at the first attempt and has penned a four-year deal with the Foxes.

Allen brought Campbell into the Football League in the summer of 2005, paying £5,000 to sign him for Brentford from Yeading after he had been part of the side who played Newcastle in the FA Cup third round earlier that year.

And it was another FA Cup showing which prompted Steve Bruce to take him to Birmingham, paying £500,000 for him a year later just three days after he had scored twice to dump Sunderland out of the FA Cup at the fourth round stage.

He failed to score in the rest of the 2005/06 season as the Blues were relegated from the top flight but played a major role in their instant return last season.

Foxes chairman Milan Mandaric told the club's website, lcfc.co.uk: ``DJ is a player whom we have been chasing for some time and after long and exhausting negotiations we are delighted to have completed the deal.

``This is a signing that really excites me and I believe he will be a great acquisition for Leicester City Football Club. He has great pace and he scores goals.''

The £2.1million fee is the highest shelled out by the Foxes since the signing of Ian Walker from Spurs in 2001 for £2.5million, and he joins fellow new boys N'Gotty, Clemence, Jimmy Nielsen, Carl Cort, Ricky Sappleton, Radostin Kishishev, Sergio Hellings, James Chambers, Jonathan Hayes, Hossein Kaebi and Shaun Newton in Allen's new-look squad.
