Anxious wait on Navas

IPSWICH manager Jim Magilton was today anxiously awaiting the outcome of an X-ray on the foot of 27-year-old central defender Cesar Navas.

The Spanish triallist, who has one year left on a contract with Malaga, was injured in last night's 5-1 victory at Crawley Town.

Magilton said today: “Cesar did very well and he looks a good player.

“It is looking as though it could be a metatarsal problem, and if that is confirmed it will be disappointing for us - and for the player.

“That would mean he would be out for around six weeks. If it is not that serious then we shall continue to have a look at him at the club.”

Fellow triallist, 19-year-old French defender Arsene Menassiu, also drew praise from the Blues' boss, who added: “Arsene impressed and did enough to be involved in Friday's game at Bury Town.

“He warrants another crack and could well be involved in our trip to Antwerp next week.”

Magilton confirmed that he will field a strong side for the game against Suffolk neighbours and Ryman League team Bury at Ram Meadow, with midfielder Gavin Williams a possible member of the squad.

Magilton said: “Gavin has been training hard and there is good news as his pelvic injury is less painful and it appears that he is making good progress.

“If he doesn't feature on Friday he could well be included in the trip to Belgium and our medical team deserve great credit for the work they have done with Gavin.”

Dean Bowditch, another injury concern, is coming along well after his operation and should make an appearance before the season kicks off in earnest while experienced central defender Richard Naylor still has to be watched over the bruised bone in his foot that he suffered last January.

Magilton added: “We have to wrap Richard up in cotton wool and monitor his situation closely, but he is making forward steps.”

Out-of-favour goalkeeper Lewis Price will play at Bury although Magilton confirmed that if he doesn't leave the club on a full transfer Ipswich will consider loaning the Welsh international out with new signing Neil Alexander and youngster Shane Supple the two keepers Magilton has earmarked for his squad this campaign.
