Beattie in Blades talks

Sheffield United manager Bryan Robson hopes to have signed Everton striker James Beattie by the end of the week.

The 29-year-old former England international only managed two goals in 15 games during an injury-plagued season at Goodison Park last term but Blades boss Robson remains keen to lure him to Bramall Lane.

He told the club's official website, Home | Sheffield United "Negotiations have gone well with James and his advisors so hopefully there will be something by the end of the week.

"I am aware that there has been speculation about his wages being a stumbling block.... particularly with the chairman being abroad at the moment."

Robson told www.sufc.co.uk: "I am still looking for players and I am remaining open-minded."

Striker Billy Sharp will be fit for the start of the season despite breaking his hand during the 2-0 victory over Portadown.

The Blades' new £2million signing was absent from the squad that played out a goalless draw with Rotherham last night but Robson was dispelled fears the injury would force the former Scunthorpe striker into a prolonged spell on the sidelines.

Robson added: "Unfortunately Billy has broken his hand and he has had it put in a cast - there was no point in risking him against Rotherham.

"He can play with the cast on, although we will have to see how he goes in training, it will depend on whether the soreness from the break has gone."
