Duff on the Verge of signing for Spuds

Quote:
Tottenham are close to completing the signing of Chelsea's Damien Duff, according to reports.
The 27-year-old winger is thought to have completed a medical on Sunday and is expected to make his move across the capital in the next few days.

The Republic of Ireland star, who moved to Chelsea from Blackburn for £17m in 2003, has a year left on his contract.

Duff has won two Premiership titles at Chelsea but has struggled to hold down a regular slot in the starting line-up.

He would become Spurs' third major signing of the summer so far after the arrival of Dimitar Berbatov, Didier Zokora, and Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

Since Jose Mourinho replaced Claudio Ranieri as boss in 2004, Duff has been hampered by knee and shoulder injuries, and the summer arrival of Michael Ballack has put his place in the side under further threat.

The signing of Ballack and striker Andriy Shevchenko could mean that Mourinho will revert to a 4-4-2 to accomodate his new signings, leaving fewer opportunites for Chelsea's wingers.

Duff began his career at Blackburn Rovers in 1996 and made over 200 appearances for the Lancashire club.

Since moving to London, Duff has featured 95 times for the Premiership champions.
Good signing actually.

superb sisgning if they pull it off. I can really see Spurs challenging for a top 4 finish. They have a great coach and strong squad. Dare i say it but i'm sure they'll finish above the Gunners. yep definitely!!

I am surprised Ferguson has not made enquiries over him, ready made replacement for Giggs.

He is a great player and if Spurs sign him they will look impressive for next season. Lennon and Duff on the wings? they will be good to watch.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has conceded that Damien Duff could leave the club. An initial £5 million offer for the Republic of Ireland winger from Tottenham has been rebuffed but they look likely to return with a better offer.

''It is not true that Duff didn't play much last season - he played two more games than the season before and was injured,'' said Mourinho.

"I have an open relationship with Duff and we have talked about all possibilities. He's a player I'm happy to keep, not desperate to keep. I like Damien Duff as a player and a person. I've listened to him for a couple of hours and understand what is going through his mind."

Promising. Although the phrase open relationship is a strange one to have used.

Open relationship? Last time I had that was with a girlfreind when I was 18.

£5M is a slap in the face for Duff, he is easily a £10M+ player, but with the players at Chelsea they will need to sell some. Not for financial reasons but to keep the harmony in the dressing room.

He's only gone to Newcatsle. Why!!! Tottenham would have been so much better with him and Newcastle are surely a worse team than Tottenham. We surely could of guaranteed him both European football and a first team place because we don't really have a LM

would like to have seen him come to Old Trafford. But joining Newcastle certainly came out of the blue.
