Chinese League round-up

Tiago Jorge Honorios late penalty earned Shanghai United a share of the points against Dalian Shide on Sunday as the teams played out a 1-1 draw in the Chinese Super League.

The Brazilian striker scored from the penalty spot 17 minutes from time after Honduran Saul Martinez had been hauled down by Dalian goalkeeper Chen Dong, cancelling out Quan Leis goal for Dalian in the 56th minute.

The draw moved United out of the relegation zone, into eighth place in the 15-team standings. Dalian, the defending champions, are currently in sixth and trail league leaders Shandong Luneng by 23 points.

Quan gave Dalian the lead when he slotted into an empty net following a cross by Zhai Yanpeng, but the eight-time Chinese league winners were not able to hold on for their eighth win in 19 league matches.

"After we conceded the goal, we showed our confidence and played even better," Tiago, who tormented the Dalian defence, said. "We have confidence in ourselves, and that is the key to success."

Meanwhile, Beijing Guoan moved level on points with Shanghai Shenhua with a 0-0 draw with Tianjin Teda, with Shanghai holding on to second place thanks to a better goal difference.

Changchun Yatai were also held 0-0, by Xiamen Lanshi, while Shenzhen Kingway and Chongqing Lifan also played out a goal-less encounter, a result which leaves Chongqing at the bottom of the standings.

Chinese Super League leaders Shandong Lunengs 2-0 win at Xian on Wednesday was played behind closed doors after fan violence during a match between the teams at the same venue two weeks ago, state media reported. Xian fans injured the Shandong manager by throwing water bottles at his head and attacking the visitors coach with bottles and rocks after their teams 3-1 defeat in a Chinese FA Cup semi-final on August 12.

As punishment, the Chinese Football Association (CFA) barred fans from Xians 50,000-seater Coca Cola stadium for Wednesdays match and police set up a perimeter blockade 100 metres away from the stadium. It was the first spectator ban for a soccer match in China, state news agency Xinhua said.

Li Jinyu scored a record 22nd league goal of the season to help Shandong to their 10th win in a row to extend their lead at the top of the table to 18 points with six matches remaining. Second placed Beijing Guoan have a game in hand. A man detained by police after the violence at the Cup match has been banned from entering any stadiums for 12 months.

Shanghai Shenhua’s bid for second place in the China Super League suffered a major knock on Saturday as they were held 1-1 by former cross-town rivals Xian Chanba in the 24th round of the season. China international midfielder Sun Xiang gave Shenhua the lead with a 31st minute free-kick but the visitors hit back a minute after the restart as Brazilian international Vicente headed home a cross from right winger Shen Han.

The draw, Shenhua’s third in a row, lifted them into second place, level on 39 points with Beijing Guoan although they have played two games more than the capital side. Runaway leaders Shandong Luneng, who are currently 18 points clear, could clinch the title if they defeat Beijing in Jinan on Sunday.

With the championship looking well out of reach, Shenhua have set their sights on second spot in the league and coach Wu Jingui signalled his side’s ambition by starting with a front-line of German international Carsten Jancker and veteran Xie Hui, who scored his first goal of the season on Wednesday against Tianjin Teda.

However, neither of the big-name forwards lived up to the expectations of Wu, who is also preparing his side for a crucial AFC Champions League quarter-final clash against Korean side Jeonbuk Motors next month. “The AFC Champions League is an equally important target,” said Wu said. “We must gear up to fight for that match.”

Honduran striker Luis Ramirez, who replaced Jancker midway through the second half, squandered a golden opportunity to win the match when he went past Xian ‘keeper Wu Yansheng but saw his shot blocked on the line by defender Huang Zhenhua. In Saturday’s other match, Liaoning defeated Wuhan Huanghelou 2-1 at home.

National midfielder Xu Liang drew first blood for Liaoning in the 11th minute and forward Guo Hui added a second for the hosts in the 51st minute. Wuhan narrowed the gap in the 82nd minute with a header by Li Hao but it was not enough to prevent them from suffering their 12th defeat in 23 matches, leaving them just two spots off the bottom of the standings.

Shanghai Shenhua moved into second place in the China Super League and enjoyed a morale boost ahead of Wednesday’s ACL quarter-final clash with Jeonbuk Motors by defeating Beijing Guoan 1-0 in Round 25 on Saturday. Shen Longyuan who has been warming the bench for most of the season scored the winner for Shenhua nine minutes into the second half as he blasted home forward Gao Lin’s well-timed cross from the left. Gao was replaced in the 62nd minute with Carsten Jancker but it was another disappointing day for the former Germany international who has not scored since joining Shenhua in May.

Shenhua manager Wu Jingui unexpectedly started the match in Beijing with Mao Jianqing who was demoted to the reserves in July. The move signaled that Mao might be fielded on Wednesday at home as Wu looks to utilize the 20-year-old forward’s pace in the continental clash with the Korean FA Cup holders. Mao could have scored just before the break but his 10-yard shot after a goalmouth scramble was blocked by Zhang Shuai, while the youngster almost doubled Shenhua’s lead in the 68th minute as his header hit the bar. Mao’s pace and trickery were causing the Guoan defence all sorts of problems and he set up Luis Rameriz in the 83rd minute but the Honduras international’s goal ruled offside by assistant referee.

Shenhua were indebted to Hong Kong central defender Ng Wai Chiu who blocked Beijing striker Du Wenhui’s 15-yard volley in the dying minutes of the second half and ensured the guests earn three points in the hard-fought match. The win put Shenhua on 42 points two ahead of third-place Changchun Yatai who will play Wuhan Huanghelou on Sunday. Beijing are fourth with 39 points as the three teams aim for the runners-up spot after runaway leaders Shandong Luneng clinched the crown on August 27 with 60 points. In Saturday’s other Round 25 match Shenyang Ginde edged Liaoning 1-0 at home. Chen Tao curled in the winner for the host in the 33rd minute.
