Ronaldo of brazil because when he is on form like in world cup98 he is simply unstoppable with the abillity to beat and defenders with his dribbling and the composure to defeat even peter schmeical at his best, Not to mention he sets up alot of goals just look at world cup02 & 06 where he set Rivaldo and Adriano up through linking up with Ronaldinho

it is extremely difficult to compare players from different eras because football has changed dramatically since some of the 'greats' have played however I would go for Maradona as he was proven on the most stages.

Maradona is the best player ever but the likes of Bergkamp and Maldini shouldn't be in that list. Zico? Beckenbaur? Platini?

Paolo Maldini is the greatest left back who ever played the game. Maradona is the greatest player.

Missing quite a few names that should be up there, however accepting that it's more "recent" players I'm surprised that Pele is up there, just confirms to me that he is indeed the best ever player this world has ever seen.

PELE the fact he's the only player that should be on there, not sure what ronaldo is on there for, he seems to get bigger every time he moves and does less, he's living off his early years when he was a star.

It doesent mean who's the best player now. It means who's the best player at their best and that undoubtedly Ronaldo

I have seen many Marradona clips on youtube. And honestly it doesent matter how good he is, Because Ronaldo fits perfectly what I expect of the perfect player. He is very well mannered, Has the abillity to take on and defeat even the best defenders, Is a big time team-player, And is "the goalkeepers nightmare" as Cantonna said when referring to his abillity to finish a play. He posses the rare quality that can make a whole team play better simply because of his positive and motivational attitude(just look at Madrid they've looked dis-organised since he left, Look at Milan domestically they've improved and picked up quite a few points from his goals).

i think you'll find that's Paolo Malidini that's brought the Milan squad back to the top of their game. he's the captain, not Ronaldo.

Real Madrid have looked disorganised because they ARE disorganised.

and watching clips on YouTube is not the same thing as watching Maradonna play. Maradonna is the greatest player of all time, not because he has the occasional moment of brilliance, but because he was brilliant for the whole match.

Maradona is certainly the best player I ever saw , Ronaldo at his peak was a great player but not as good as Diego or Pele

Then there were players such as Puskas & De Stefano that none of us are old enough to remember.

It is true that Milan's upturn did coincide with Ronaldo's arrival but it is also true that Real Madrid's upturn coincided with his departure.

i know another misguided fool who says that ronaldo is the greatest. the reason pele will always be the best player ever is that he was the most complete player, if he was asked to play in goal he would probably have been just as good as he was scoring or taking people on

that may be taking it a little far, but you've got a point there toonmagic.

Pele was the greatest in his day, but i think Maradonna surpassed him.

Maradonna is a drug/alcohol-addict and probably the worst example of a football player. And on top of that Maradonna wasent facing the defenders of today like Maldini, Terry etc.. Everybody knows defenders today on average
are better than before

that doesn't make him a bad player. you can't judge a player's ability by the fact he suffers from an illness like alcoholism. and besides, he never let it affect his on-field performances, he remained a great player throughout his career, whether he was on drugs or not.

dear oh dear - once again you demonstrate your lack of knowledge and make a tit of yourself. Maldini began playing for Milan in 1984, the same year Maradonna signed for Napoli. they played against each other in Serie A for seven years. do your homework next time.

oh, and John Terry in the same sentence as Paolo Maldini? sure it's not you that's high on drugs right now?

There is no denying that Maradonna is not one of the greatest players that ever played the game

i would say that for all maradonna's faults he was a genius and it is difficult to split him and pele up into best and second best as they were probably the greatest players of their generation and it's hard to see anyone that could take that accolade from them

my point is that the two players i mentioned maintained a high standard throughout their respective careers, ronaldo has never been the same since he got injured when he joined inter, great players come back and still have the same standard of play, the example i most often use is alan shearer two career threatening knee injuries and life threatening menningitis and he still played at the top of his game, and will probably hold the all time scoring record for along time. also will ronaldo score 1000 career goals answer no

following on from toonmagic's point, Maradonna played a charity match last summer with a number of celebrities and other ex-players. at age 46, having been out of shape for several years, overweight and far past his prime physically... he was still by far the best player on the pitch. he was everywhere, not putting a foot wrong, beating opponents twenty years junior. he's still got something left after all these years. it's that magic, that skill, that genius that he displayed during his professional career that sets him above all others.

Ronaldo was the best in the world at one point, but Maradona still is the greatest player of all time.
