Will Becks sell football to America?

One thing nobody can deny about David Beckham is that he can sell almost anything to anyone. But he's now facing his biggest marketing challenge yet. Having signed for LA Galaxy he has the duel task of selling Brand Beckham to the US market as well as trying to convince his adopted country that football is a sport that they should get excited about, rather than just something that girls and foreigners play. Can he do it?

The likes of Pele and George Best failed in the 1970s and 80s, when the USA first tried to get interested in what they call soccer, but Beckham arrives at a time when Major League Soccer has at least started to gain a decent foothold over there. The MLS are banking (quite literally) on Goldenballs to bring in new punters and help the sport compete against the likes of baseball, American football and basketball.

Is Becks the man for the job? Will he be a success off the pitch as well as on it for Galaxy and the MLS? We want to know what you think about the arrival of Beckham in America and what impact he can have over there...

Over the many years football in America has improved in interest, America eg, having the most registered youth players of any country in the world, however when those youth grow up they tend to go to the American sports?
Beckham will do no harm in regards to interest, to what extent remains to be seen.

As a player he's not in the same league as Pele but he is better branded.

i think if pele was playing today then no but in this media hungry world we live in i think beckham will be remebered long after his career has finished and in some ways i hope the standard doesn't improve to much as football seems to be the only team sport that the americans arn't that bothered about

it says it on this website Three Amigos: The Trender : Football news, live scores, fixtures and results from 4thegame.com
"Becks seems to have gone back to being a 'girly man' (which is surely dangerous in California, let's hope the Governator doesn't notice again)"

He will add some more interest to what degree remains to be seen, the media will play a big part in it.
He is a verygood player and will do well in the MLS. America is aware that he is here, but he and soccer are still having to compete with baseball, basketball, and American football, and that still is no mean feat.

I think it is possible for Football to become a major sport in America , Basketball came from nowhere 30 years ago to overtake baseball & rival American Football in popularity

Football or "soccer" ( I hate that word) is played by more children in America than any other sport today though many switch to gridiron in their late teens so the oppertunity is there.

His wife is in the limlight too much and will overshadow David. I don't think he'll make an impact but then i'm slightly biased as I don't like him much. Some of the things hes done are great but he annoys me

i don't think so, not when you think of some of the players who finished there careers over there, like mattheus and stoichkov, if the interest was that genuine then it should already be bigger than ice hockey, shearer's to boring for the yanks, don't you remeber the answer he gave to the reporter who asked him how he'd spent his summer after blackburn won the title ' creosoted my fence' don't think that would go down to well in america, and anyway lets face it if pele couldn't get the yanks to like it what chance has beckham got

all beckham does is pass and take free kicks and judging by his recent performances he can't do that very well anymore
