Ferguson Pleased With Man Utd's Shield Win

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson stresses the value of the workout while enjoying his side's victory in the Community Shield.

Sir Alex Ferguson said Manchester United's Community Shield win over Chelsea in a penalty-shoot-out was an important part of their preparations for the new season, commenting: "You have to use it as a stepping stone for next week, I think both teams did that.

"A lot of the players are tired but it brings them on towards the sharpness and tempo needed to win games [in the Premiership].

"Neither side was 100% ready, but you get that in a Community Shield match."

Ferguson hailed the quality of goals - United's, scored by Ryan Giggs, and Chelsea's, converted by Florent Malouda.

"I thought the goals were very good - Malouda took his goal very, very well," said Fergie.

"The build-up to our goal was excellent too, it was a marvellous finish from Ryan. He's slotted it in a gap in the net very well."

Of course, ultimately the hero for United was Dutchman Edwin van der Sar, the goalkeeper who kept a clean-sheet in the shoot-out, saving all three Chelsea penalties as United triumphed 3-0 on spot kicks.

Van der Sar observed: "That was a little bit of revenge after we lost to Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

"I was 5-2 down on penalty shoot-outs in my career so this was a great feeling and I think we deserved to win overall.

"We played the better football, we had more chances than them."

good result for utd but i wonder if the curse of the charity shield will strike and they won't win the league as has happened so many times before, i think about 8 out of the last 10 seasons

liverpool beat chelsea two-one schevchenko scored first and then i think it was a crouch brace which sealed the win, so the theory does kind of stand up
