vCash: 480 | Guimaraes takes charge of Panama Former Costa Rica coach Alexandre Guimaraes has been named as the new coach of Panama, the national federation said on Wednesday. A statement on the federation website said Brazilian-born Guimaraes, who trained Costa Rica at the 2002 and 2006 FIFA World Cups, would coach the team in their 2010 World Cup qualifiers. He replaces former Panama striker Julio Dely Valdes, who local media said would take charge of the U-20 team. Panama, who have never qualified for the FIFA World Cup, finished runners-up to the USA at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2005. They are at home to Peru in a friendly on Sunday, where the team will be coached on an interim basis by Rene Mendieta. |
