Pele insists he - even at 16 - had some experience.

"To select someone who has never played is a big surprise," he told Sky Sports News.

"It is a big difference from me. I was playing in the Maracana for my first national game against Argentina I when I was 16, then I played with Santos for eight to nine months, after almost one year I then went to Sweden with Brazil.

"I had a little bit of experience, I had played some games in the league, this gave me a little bit of confidence but even then in Sweden I was a little lost - it was a dream.

"Imagine a player who never played even in his team going to the World Cup!

"Yeah [I think] he is too inexperienced, maybe he will have a lot to play but it's very difficult."

I agree it has been beaten to death but this may actually help Walcott in some perverse way. Slating the guy may only make hime even morer determined.
