vCash: 500 | O’Neill Wanted England Job Martin O’Neill has revealed he would have taken the England managers’ had he been offered it. The football association had considered O’Neill for the position before deciding Steve McClaren would be the man to succeed Sven-Goran Eriksson. The ex-Celtic boss, who has been out of football for a year since leaving Celtic Park to look after his ill wife, admitted he would have accepted the chance to boss England had he been offered the job. In an interview with BBC Radio Five Live, O’Neill said: “ It is one of the great jobs in football. If Brian Clough, who had an ego the size of 15 houses, had the humility to go for an interview for the England job, then the rest of us mortals should be able to subject ourselves to that. “ Overall I didn’t get the job, whether people on the other side of the table were impressed, unimpressed, had their own particular agenda, eventually you can come up with all sorts of reasons, the fact is when the dust settled I wasn’t the England manager.” |
