John Terry To Shoulder Responsibility If England Fail To Qualify For Euro 2008 Finals

With a must-win Euro 2008 qualifier in Estonia coming up, England skipper John Terry has declared that if the Three Lions do not qualify for next year’s finals in Austria and Switzerland, he is ready to take full responsibility for the debacle, but urged that his side wants to be positive and start with a win in Tallinn tonight.

Steve McClaren’s side are fourth in the group and if they do not win tonight the already under-fire manager might have had his last game in charge of Three Lions.

"How much responsibility will I take if England do not qualify? I will take full responsibility if it goes that way but I am not sitting here and talking negatively about anything like that,” said Chelsea skipper Terry.

"It's down to me. I'll take full responsibility if we don't manage to reach the finals but it's down to me to lead the boys and make sure everything is right.

"We are desperate to get the win against Estonia. We can't wait for the game. We are excited about it. We are looking forward to it.

"Everyone knows how important it is, not just to us, but to everyone back home in England and the great support we get all around the world. I get asked what it will be like sitting on a beach in two weeks without a win under our belts but I don't even want to think along those lines.

"I am not going to think negatively. That is not in our thoughts. We are all thinking positively.

"We are going to be giving 110 per cent and doing our bit and we are just asking for that from them like they normally give."

Jumping to the defence of McClaren, the ace centre-back said: "Steve has tried to deflect it away from the players in the same way as Jose (Mourinho) does at Chelsea.

"He tries to deflect it away from us and take a lot of it on himself. Both of the managers do that and it does make it easier for the players and we all thank him. We are fully behind the manager."
