We beat Real Madrid, Barca and Man U to Cavani say Palermo

Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini claims that his side beat off competition from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United to secure the signature of Edison Cavani in January.

The young Uruguayan striker came off the bench on his Serie A debut earlier this month to score the equaliser against Fiorentina.

He first attracted the interest of Europe's top clubs at last January's Under-20 South American Championships where he scored seven goals in nine games and Zamparini is understandably delighted to have signed the player.

"His signing was a beautiful achievement for us. Chasing him were Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United," he told La Stampa.

"He is the type of player we should be signing more, a great young talent of 19-20 years of age."

One player who will be leaving Palermo however will be striker Andrea Caracciolo who does not fit into Zampaini's plans.

"Technically Caracciolo is a very good forward, but he has not really worked out for us because maybe he hasn't adapted to our system," confirmed Zampaini.

"In July he will leave, if Amauri had not being injured he would have left in January."

Seems unlikely the guy would chose Palermo over those 3 , but maybe he thought he had more chance of first team football there
