basically, the owner, Brooks Mileson, is dying in a hospital in Newcastle. his money is the only reason they've done so well over the past few seasons, and now that he's incapacitated, the money is drying up. they haven't been able to build a squad to cope with the SPL, so they've been sitting bottom for most of this season. more recently, the club hasn't been able to pay the players' wages, and they're struggling to field a squad.

no, Gretna don't really have any traditional rivals, but they're not popular among a number of clubs because of the way they bought success. the Jags nearly went bust a few years ago, and we've been forced to keep the purse strings tight ever since to avoid a similar situation. there are a few other teams in a similar situation, they don't have the money.

Gretna were bought up by a millionaire, bought their way into the 3rd division, and bought their way to the title. they then continued to buy their way through the 2nd and 1st divisions and into the SPL. everyone else had their best players poached, and were held back by the richest team in the league. it was like playing the Old Firm, only with a larger percentage of glory-hunters as their support.

i don't really want to see them go out of business, but it'd be nice to see them taught a lesson. brought down a peg or two, and back to a level playing field.
