McGeady's International Defection

I don't know if many of you realise this.

Celtic's young player, Aiden McGeady is Scottish by birth although he had been playing for Ireland's international youth/schoolboy setup.

With his recent performances in the league and CL we can see that he is a class player that would be a great addition to Scotland.

However, Aiden has decided to play for Ireland and Scotland lose a quality young player to pick from. Some will cite sectarianism for his reason to play for Ireland. But if you are Scottish you play for Scotland, this is my view.

My question, do you agree with his decision and why? Should players be allowed to play for National sides other than the country they were born in.

I am a definite no

Totally agree with you Joe. Some old firm fans need there head checked because there are to many celtic fans wearing ireland tops and to many rangers fans wearing england tops. I think Mcgeady definatly fell for this psuedo patriotic way of thinking.

The Irish FA have a big part to play in this because as soon as he broke into the celtic and said he would pick ireland they capped him at the first oppertunity and then benched him. The Irish FA also tried to get Darren Fletcher as well.

There should be something that can be done about this because mcgeady is as scottish as they come. It does seem really unfair now that you see the way he played against rangers on saturday.

first and foremost I am Scottish and proud to be. You should be proud of your home nation.

I am angry because you can see that he is a quality player that will should be, but will not be playing for my country, it just seems be a missed opportunity for Scotland.

I hope this nonsense about Ireland - From both sides of the OF - would end.

Yes he has been playing for Ireland.

However, I believe that his Mother & Father are Scottish. I am of the belief that if you are Scottish you play for Scotland, Engish - England etc.

Would you like a Scotsman playing for England?

He has the right to choose who he plays for. If it is Ireland let him play for Ireland. I don't want a player playing for Scotland who doesn't want to play for us.

It is a pity as he could be great for Scotland

I think it is up to the individual player to decide who he want's to play for as long as he is qualified for that nation.
Scotland have in the past had players born in England of scottish parents Stuart McCall springs to mind.

The thing about McCall is that he was never wanted by England to play. Granted he played for Rangers and must have had some Scottish ancestry. McGeady's decision to play for Ireland is likely due to the religion factor here in Scotland. Many Celtic fans wear Ireland tops to games due the clubs history, not many Scotland tops there. Another point that annoys me.

I think it is more a feeling of loss for Scotland that I am angry.

In one instance a celtic fan that i know asked me if i was a hun because he saw me wearing a scotland top. its a sad day when these petty issues can effect your sence of national pride.
