Clubs turn to Gold for help

Birmingham chairman David Gold says he has been approached by five other clubs about possible future investments.

The clubs have contacted Gold and co-owner David Sullivan believing their time at St Andrew's is about to come to an end.

But Gold insists he would not pursue any potential deals until he knew the full extent of Carson Yeung's proposed takeover of the Blues.

Gold told the Birmingham Mail: "There have been approaches from other clubs. I'm not sure whether it's because of my good looks and charming personality, or my bank balance!

"Seriously, five parties have expressed an interest and, to a degree, it is monetary, but there are other reasons - 15 years' experience, 10 as a chairman - and a number of people have made that clear.

"But I have said to these people that yes, I'm happy to do lunch, yes I'm happy to have dinner, but I am still the controlling shareholder of Birmingham City along with David.

"Until such a time as that changes, if it changes, then there is nothing really to speak about. The important thing for myself, Steve, Karren and David right now is to concentrate on Birmingham City."

Gold, who currently holds a 23.22 perecent share in the Premier League club, along with managing director Karren Brady and manager Steve Bruce were all asked to stay on the last time the board met with Yeung.

But Bruce's position is now believed to be hanging by a thread after Yeung refused to approve the manager's new contract.

Yeung is due to hold crunch talks with Brady and Bruce later this week.

Gold added: "The last meeting we had with Mr Yeung and the Chinese was very amicable and we were led to believe they were happy to keep Steve, Karren, myself and David Sullivan in place.

"I would be happy to stay, whether in some sort of ambassadorial position, maybe chairman of the football club with Mr Yeung chairman of the board, that kind of idea.

"Now what's happened with Steve's contract, I'm not so sure what the situation is. There will be a meeting later this week when the picture should become a lot clearer.

"We need to know what Mr Yeung's intentions are and we have stressed to him that such uncertainty does not help our aim of trying to survive in the Premier League."
