Bernard: I should never have left Newcastle

The French full back clinched a return to St James' Park on Friday after being released by Rangers prior to the transfer deadline.

He turned his back on a contract at Leeds United to seal his second chance with The Magpies, who he originally joined in 2000 from Lyon.

His first spell in the North East ended in January 2005 when the defender joined Southampton on a loan deal.

Bernard then signed a contract with Rangers, but failed to establish himself north of the border and was axed by Paul Le Guen on Thursday.

With the 26-year-old now back on Tyneside, he concedes it was a grave error to quit Newcastle in the first place.

"When you spend so many years with a club like Newcastle, I just wish I'd never left," Bernard told the club's official website.

"That was probably the biggest mistake I've made since I've been in football.

"It's Newcastle, it's a big club and maybe you only realise that when you leave it.

"As soon as I passed through the door I realised the mistake I had made.

"I want to play for this club and show everyone I'm back for good."
In my opinion Newcastle should never have signed him again, he is sh**e

He was ok for Newcastle before he left but he did nothing during his time at Rangers - mind you that may be more down to the ex-manager McLeish factor.

He's better than some of the options they already have. TBH, Newcastle's defence needs as much options as it can get cause at the moment its is leaking alot of goals.

i am pleased he was certainly a capable defender as well as a marauding fullback not sh***e as some people seem to think, it remains to be seen wether he still has got what it takes for the premiership after spending some years in the wilderness, but for a free transfer it seems a good deal and lets face it our defence needs strengthening and quickly
