Are there 2 many foreign players in the premiership?

What do foreign players bring to the English leagues except for diving, showboating and foul play. I ask you are they worth the money??

I think the answer is that the very best are yes and our leauge would be no where near as exciting as it is if it wasnt for the foreign players.

I watche dthe Rugby last night between Wakefield and the Dragons ansd their was constant talk about how relegation is ruining young British talent due to the fact that teams have to deliver instant sucess and therefore have to pay out for foreign players which then ruin the chances of young British players coming through. Their two theories were to either completley scrap relegation which is how the Australians do it and I think we all know how good they are at Rugby. I don't really like this because it promotes complacence and means you end up with dead wood and a lack of competition in the lower leauges of the table.

their other suggestion is that when a team is promoted they have three years in which they are exempt from relegation meaning they have time to develop young players and bring them into the game. t be hoest I thinl this a good idea.

However would it work for football. Discuss.

ronaldo also dives but i think he is not doing that now, is he?
we'll never quite know when a player falls, he is diving or not. Maybe he looks like he dives but actually he really falls

ronaldo has matured after the world cup you could see him diving in nearly every match in the world cup but now you dont see it very often.

Ferguson tells him to cut it out thats why. Before world cup, for utd he wasnt diving either. Scolari just has cheating tactics.

This is something that had been discussed in Scotland a few years ago. I remember that tommy burns was very keen on this idea. However i dont really think that it is a good system as every team in the league needs to compete for the same thing. Any in tha past few years the newly promoted sides have done well in the prem. If you want to give teams more of an even shout there should be some financial regulations that all teams have to stick to i.e they have to run within thier operating costs. The worst thing that has happened to the prem has been abramovich coming in and buying two successive titles.

Back to the point about too many foraigners? I dont think so. Every top league in the world has a good level of quality internationals playing at different clubs. Outside some England internationals such as sherear, gerrard and rooney the best players within the prem have been foreign. Would really have wanted the premiership without Zola, Di Canio, Henry, Bergcamp and Cantona. If you took the foreigners out of the Prem it does not automatically mean that a host of young english players would come through and provide the same quality.

I think you should have a look at what some of your players are doing b4 you go accusing scolari of having 'cheating tactics'. there is another thread on the site which discusses the fact that brittish teams have also gained from diving and it is not puely a foraign tactic. Did fergie complain last week when giggs went down for that penelty. People have said to me that giggs fell because he pulled his hamstring. he done his hamstring in the act of diving and his leg wasnt sore enough to stop him from shouting to the ref for penalty. Players like Gerrard, Bellamy, Scoles and Cole have all been guilty of trying to cheat the ref.

The three points that you mention are not exclusive to foreign players. I accept that foreigners are more prone to diving but the other two I am not so sure about. They are worth the money if they are skillful enough and produce the goods for the team that bought them.

There are many English players who will also dive at a moments notice. Squid mentions Giggs [although Welsh, has been playing in England for 10+ years] and he claims that he pulled his hamstring, but it no injury to his mouth or arm to try and tell the ref that he wasn't touched. Gerrard in the friendly for England before the WC. Beckham, breathe on him and he will fall over dramatically.

England have their fair share of showboaters also, step up Joe Cole.

Dirty players..ala Robbie Savage

Its obvious Scolari influences his players to dive, just watch the many portugal games in the world cup, you had many players diving all over the place, including Ronaldo but when he puts on the Utd shirt he cuts it down. Ferguson has said that if Ronaldo ever dives in training, all the Utd players kick him when he's on the floor - kinda harsh I think but Ronaldo has cut out his diving for Utd.
I never really said that English teams don't have players who dive, look at Gerrard, I think he's a diving ****, watch what he did for England and Liverpool on numerous occasions. Giggs did genuinely look like he slipped and he didn't start appealing for a penalty from what I saw. He just got back up and the referee blew his whistle and started convincing our players that it was a penalty.

BTW, I've never seen Scholes cheat the ref, when has that happened?

Yeah i will admit i was maybe a bit harsh with Scoles. but as far as Ronaldo cutting down the diving when he's with Man U? i dont think so.

Its just that there is this self rightious attitude in the UK about diving being a foraign trait. Addmittedly it is a big part of the continental game. But there have been numerous times when Brittish teams have profited from cheating. And at these times there is no outcry from the players, managers, or media.

I suppose what i want really is if we in this country are going to say that diving and coning the referee is a foraaign thing then players and managers have to be fully honest and admit when they feel they have not been fouled. A bit of fair play instead of trying to cheat a refereee and makethe guys job even harder. The way Robbie Fowler did at Highbury a few years ago for example.

This sounds to me like sportsmanship but at the same time i find the idea that this would actually happen as ludicrous!
