vCash: 500 | cech warns premiership attackers over chelsea defence Petr Cech has warned Premiership strikers that Chelsea's defence is meaner than ever. Jose Mourinho's success at Stamford Bridge has been founded on a watertight defensive unit, with Cech keeping 53 clean sheets in 94 games for the Blues. The big Czech keeper is back in the team after shoulder surgery and has leaked only one goal in four games since replacing Carlo Cudicini. He is living up to his billing as the best in the world and quashed fears that the exit of William Gallas would leave Chelsea vulnerable at the back. Cech, 24, said: "We've always played well in defence. It's been the key to our success and I'm happy we've been able to keep going with that. "It's always important and we always try to build up from good defence. "Keep a clean sheet and you only have to score one to win. "We have good players up front of course and hopefully we will score more goals and it will be easier for us. "We just try to keep going from the last two seasons and do the same job. "I don't set specific targets but every time I play I want to keep a clean sheet. "I absolutely hate conceding goals." Chelsea have new full-backs in Ashley Cole and Khalid Boulahrouz but the usual defensive solidity was evident against Liverpool on Sunday when they weathered a second-half storm with 10-men to cling to a 1-0 lead. Boss Mourinho said: "We were very strong defensively. The attitude and the spirit and the friendship in the squad are good. "The team couldn't play attacking football any more, they just had to fight and defend. "Liverpool put [Peter] Crouch and [Dirk] Kuyt up front to try and give us problems but, for Cech, crosses are the easiest part of the game. "Give him crosses and he will come and get them all." Mourinho has gone to great lengths to stress the problems he has faced at the start of the new season. After giving his World Cup stars an extended summer break, the Chelsea boss claims he has been deprived of the time to work tactically with his new signings until this week. Mourinho said: "After five matches, the plan was to have 15 points but we knew we could lose points because the team has not been at maximum capacity. "We had two matches away - one against a team we lost to last season - and we had three matches at home - one against a direct opponent for the title. "Twelve points and a goal difference that is six goals positive, I think we are okay." Chelsea were beaten at Middlesbrough, last month, but are poised just one point behind league-leaders Portsmouth after five games. Cech said: "We had a difficult start to the season. We had so many players at the World Cup and many players came back late and came back tired. "We started straight away in the competitions and it wasn't easy. We need a little time to settle down. "We have improved already and we can be better. "We are progressing everyday step-by-step and there's still a lot to come from this team. I hope we prove it in the coming days." The Blues face a West London derby at Fulham on Saturday but Mourinho is much happier after spending all week on the training ground, working with almost his entire squad. Mourinho said: "We have to train. We have to train tactically, movement, the link of the team." Joe Cole worked separately as he continued his battle to overcome the knee injury which has limited him to less than 10 minutes of competitive football this season. Arjen Robben returned from injury as a second-half substitute on Sunday and could start in place of Michael Ballack against Fulham. Ballack misses the next three games through suspension after his red card against Liverpool. |
