vCash: 500 | Downing gonna be the new Giggs Middlesbrough and England winger Stewart Downing has been tipped to develop into 'the next Ryan Giggs' if critics give him the chance. Boro team-mate Andrew Davies came through Boro's academy system alongside Downing and has seen the 22-year-old blossom. Downing may lose his place in Steve McClaren's England team for Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier against FYR Macedonia, with his performances in the absence of the injured Joe Cole leading some to question his contribution. However, 21-year-old Davies is confident Downing can prove his detractors wrong and become as complete a player as Wales and Manchester United superstar Giggs. He said: "It is very unfair. Somebody gave him some of the stats for the games he has played for England and they showed over the last few games, his pass rate was in the nineties (90+%) and his crossing was good. "I just do not understand why your own country and your own fans and the press would want to get on the back of a player who is doing well. "He is a top-class player or he would not be in the team. You have got to give him credit - he is only 22. "You have got to help him instead of criticising him, and that can only be good for England. "If you tell him how good he is and how well he is doing, he is only going to get better. "He is only 22 - in the next five years, you could so easily see him being the next Ryan Giggs." Downing's emergence under McClaren at the Riverside Stadium helped catapult him on to the international stage, and he was in the squad which once again bowed out at the quarter-final stage of a major tournament in this summer's World Cup finals. The departure of Sven-Goran Eriksson has seen his former club manager take over the reins, and the Middlesbrough-born player has this week been forced to dismiss charges of 'football nepotism'. However, Davies is confident that, just as when McClaren sent him out on loan to neighbours Sunderland before he made the breakthrough on Teesside, Downing will answer his doubters. He said: "Even when he went out on loan to Sunderland, the lads always thought he was going to be a top-class player, but where, we did not know. "He got the belief when he went to Sunderland and did so well. He is mentally very strong, so that will not affect him at all." There was no place in the England squad this time around for Boro's on-loan Real Madrid defender Jonathan Woodgate, with McClaren admitting he came very close to selecting him. However, Davies, who has seen the 26-year-old at close hand since his return to English football, believes it is only a matter of time before he gets the call. Davies said: "Jonathan reads the game very well and he is another one who is very strong mentally. He has been through a tough time, but he has done excellently. "If he stays injury-free, he will make a real impact. "No-one has ever doubted what he can do on the pitch. As long as he can stay injury-free, he is going to be excellent for Middlesbrough - and that would be excellent for England too." |

vCash: 500 | To be honest with you he spends half of his career injured but still gets in the England squad - the same go's for the selection of Jenas IMO Spurs have been poor this season and dosnt deserve the call even know he is injured The Sven days were a joke but i think they have just got worse |

vCash: 500 | Sorry buddy i just dont rate him - i just think its one of these quick fixes to solve the left flank nightmare - IMO Walcott should be playing there And i believe the only reason Downing is in is because of McClaren's links with him - apart from Spurs no other club has been interested in him |

vCash: 500 | Downing has done nothing for the last season. He has the talent, as Jenas does, but they are not playing well at the moment. Neither of then deserve to be anywhere near the England set up at them moment. |

Downing hasn't done enough to get into the squad. He is not playing well for Boro, do you really think he will play better when faced with more difficult opponents?

vCash: 460 | My midield would be - Cole Gerrard Parker and Lampard. parker to sit, and the other 3 braking, and get width by nringing up the full backs. Quote:

On the evidence of Downing today basically summed my point up on him - if there relying on him to deliver then they may as well forget it - my nan can cross the ball better than that Frank Lampard was once again a weak link - if McClaren has the balls to drop Beckham then Frank wont be long IMO - complete different player in an England shirt England had no shape what so ever and Macedonia deserved there point today - they played England and matched them pound for pound all over the park - Crouch worked hard but there defence had him in there pocket alot of the time IMO I thought the game changed when SWP come into the fold and we should of done better with the late to chances he created - but he wasnt used to his full potential - play him on the right where he belongs and get the service we were crying out for

vCash: 500 | I would agree with ClaretAVFCBlue on Downing. He was shocking and I can't remember a decent cross coming into the box for Crouch. I actually think that Downing has talent but he has not done enough to even get a sniff of an England shirt. |
