Owen commited to Newcastle

Newcastle striker Michael Owen has told the Tyneside club he will stay for as long as they want him.

The 26-year-old signed a four-year deal when he clinched his £17million move to the Magpies from Real Madrid in August last year.

He has managed only 10 starts for the Magpies since as first a fractured metatarsal and then the knee injury he suffered in England's World Cup clash with Sweden in June sidelined him.

However, he told fans at a talk-in at Wallsend Boys' Club on Thursday night he is happy at Newcastle and will see out his contract, if not more.

"In terms of how long I stay at Newcastle, I am here as long as everybody wants me,'' he told the Newcastle Evening Chronicle.

"I had four years on my contract when I signed last year, so I would say at least that length of time and then you would have to ask the chairman for the rest.''

Owen was last week able to dispense with his crutches as he stepped up his rehabilitation from two operations on his knee.

He admitted the injuries he has suffered during his time on Tyneside have been frustrating, but is hopeful his problems are at an end.

He said: "I had not had an operation in my life before I came to Newcastle, and then I end up having four in a year.

"It is unbelievable - but this is definitely the last.

"I have never been injured for this length of time, so hopefully this is only a blip and I will be back.''

playing only just ten games really is a loss for Newcastle. They bought him with a huge amount of money.

Newcastle seem to sign plyers that arer injury prone, I can never understand it. Just as well they never signed Woodgate too.

If Owen can stay fit and get some sort of form going then he could give the lift that they need, but it looks like being a long tough season for player and club.
