vCash: 500 | Diouf Double Downs Newcastle El-Hadji Diouf scored a second-half brace as Bolton Wanderers came from behind to stun Newcastle United at St James' Park. The Senegal striker twice punished slack Magpies defending to score from close range after Shola Ameobi had given the home side a first-half lead from the penalty spot. Bolton's first-ever Premier League win at St James' Park - and their fourth in their last five games - propelled them to third in the table, while Newcastle remain in 15th place after a fifth Barclays Premiership defeat of the season. Obafemi Martins returned to the Magpies' starting line-up after being used only as a substitute in the defeat at Manchester United a fortnight ago. There was a place for Nolberto Solano after his recovery from a hamstring injury, while Titus Bramble played ahead of Steven Taylor following his one-match ban. Bolton boss Sam Allardyce named the side which started the 2-0 victory over Liverpool after Nicolas Anelka shook off a thigh problem. Newcastle might have taken the lead inside two minutes but Martins failed to control Emre's long punt into the box as the forward raced in on goal. Ameobi then sent a close-range header just over after Abdoulaye Meite had failed to clear Peter Ramage's bouncing cross as Bolton struggled to get out of the blocks. Bramble, who was sent off for two bookable offences in his last league game, against Everton, was perhaps fortunate to escape a booking for a scything tackle from behind on Anelka soon after. Allardyce's side are enjoying their best-ever start to a Premier League season, having lost just once so far, but Newcastle continued to enjoy the better of the opening exchanges, with the pace of Martins in particular causing problems. However, the 21-year-old Nigerian was twice guilty of failing to test Wanderers goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen after creating space for himself on the edge of the box, sending two shots high over the bar. But the home side were awarded a penalty in the 18th minute by Alan Wiley when Faye was adjudged to have handled Martins' right-wing cross, the referee pointing to the spot after consulting with his assistant. Gary Speed's complaints were waved away before Ameobi confidently sent Jaaskelainen the wrong way for his fifth goal of the season. It was the first goal Bolton had conceded in five games and it seemed to spark them into life as they enjoyed a spell of possession around the Newcastle box. But they struggled to threaten Steve Harper's goal until 10 minutes before the break, when the home keeper made a double save from Diouf and Kevin Davies. Diouf worked his way into the box only to be dispossessed by Scott Parker, whose interception forced his own keeper to make a block. The ball ran to Davies, whose shot was parried by Harper, who recovered to clear the loose ball before Anelka could pounce. Ramage should have doubled Newcastle's lead in the 39th minute but the defender blazed over from six yards after Martins had headed Damien Duff's deep left-wing cross back across goal. Wiley produced his first yellow card of the game just before the break for Solano's clumsy tackle on Speed but Newcastle comfortably repelled Bolton's attack to go in at half-time ahead. Martins almost scored Newcastle's second within 30 seconds of the restart but, after outpacing the Bolton defence to latch onto a punt over the top, his left-footed volley was well parried by Jaaskelainen. Ramage then came to Newcastle's rescue when he blocked Nolan's shot seven yards from goal after Bolton had beaten the offside trap. The away side were finding chances easier to come by, though, and Harper was forced to punch away crosses from Diouf twice in quick succession. Bolton's equaliser came in the 55th minute when Newcastle defensive deficiencies came to the fore once more. Right-back Stephen Carr failed to cut out Meite's long cross-field pass to Anelka, who controlled the ball on his chest before delivering a simple pass across goal for an unmarked Diouf to tap home. And within two minutes Bolton had turned the game on its head with a second for Diouf. Ivan Campo sent a long free-kick into the box where Davies outjumped two Magpies defenders to nod the ball on to an again unchallenged Diouf, who headed home from two yards. Magpies boss Glenn Roeder reacted by sending on Charles N'Zogbia in place of Solano, who had enjoyed plenty of joy down the right in the first half but who was feeling the effects of his first game back from injury. Emre, who had won several 50-50 challenges in the first half, became the second player to be shown the yellow yard by Wiley for a late tackle on Diouf, who was also booked for his reaction. Bolton had now taken control of the match as the Magpies faithful, vociferous in the first half, were stunned into silence. Diouf was hunting the first hat-trick of the Barclays Premiership season but failed to capitalise after beating Newcastle's offside trap, the Magpies' defence recovering to dispossess the Senegal man. Anelka came close to extending Bolton's lead in the 79th minute but, after turning Carr inside out on the left of the box, the Frenchman sent his low shot just wide of the far post. Craig Moore was booked for a foul on Anelka, before Emre blasted a shot wide from the edge of the box, with Jaaskelainen rooted to the spot, as Newcastle desperately looked to salvage something from the game. It proved to be the Turkey midfielder's last contribution to the match as he was replaced by Giuseppe Rossi with six minutes left. Stelios Giannakopoulos then came on from Diouf, to boos from some of the home support, as Allardyce successfully preserved a rare win for Bolton on Tyneside. |
