Bolton fear the loss of Anelka

Bolton chairman Phil Gartside has warned the clubs fans that Nicolas Anelka could leave if attendances do not improve.

Crowds at the Reebok Stadium are down 2,000 on last season, despite Wanderers challenging for a Champions League spot.

And Gartside fears the club could lose their star striker as a result.

He told the Daily Mirror: "If we want to keep players like Nicolas Anelka happy, then weve got to give them the support they deserve. Fans have to realise they can help the players, especially the likes of Nicolas, who are used to playing in major stadiums in front of big crowds. We need to improve the atmosphere here."

Anelka joined the Trotters in the summer for £8million from Turkish side Fenerbahce and has scored nine goals for the club as they sit fifth in the Premiership, just two points off a Champions League place.

Bolton have already cut prices for some home games and Gartside revealed some of the money from the new TV deal would be used to keep ticket prices down.

However, the extent of the problem was evident when 2,500 season ticket holders failed to turn up for the clash with Charlton last Saturday.

"We cant keep discounting tickets," he said.

"Some of the TV money will go towards keeping the cost of football down, but we need the fans to get behind us now."

Why do the clubs keep going on about supporters not attending games. Clubs have been ripping off the fans in terms of ticket prices for several seasons now. So now, when the fans stop coming because they can't afford it, it becomes the fans fault. Can't believe the bit about discounting the tickets. If tickets are discounted now what will they be when they put the prices back up? Or am i missing the point?

Poor attendances are probably one of a number of reasons Anelka will want to leave, the general gist of most of the other points is that he is a miserable moaning git (class player though) but thats a totally different story. Bolton might help their attendances if they play some attractive football, they are an extremely good and useful side but they don't exactly play total football do they!!

Seems Anelka is like a time bomb. More than one season at a club and he cant hack it.

It's a results driven buisness now. They play the way they do to get results. I don't think any team likes playing them.
