Last season was Makelele I believe he still has the talent but is not getting played. Nolans pretty strong and I consider Carrick a defensive midfielder

Makelele by some distance is the best holding midfielder. For me Davids flatters to deceive

I would say Michael Essien
he's really fit and can play in a lot of positions

I'd agree with lb7 here. Essien for me. Although Zokora is starting to take shape now...hopefully we can see how he does next season.

i would say the top 5 defensive midfielders in the country would be:
5th: Carrick
4th: Ballack
3rd: Zokora
2nd: Sidwell
1st: Essien
