Roeder rejects the notion of selling Taylor or N'Zogbia

Boss Glenn Roeder has issued a hands-off warning to clubs weighing up interest in Newcastle's young stars.

England Under-21 defender Steven Taylor and French midfielder Charles N'Zogbia are said to be targets for the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal.

Roeder said: "No club has spoken to us about Steven Taylor and if they did they would be wasting their time. We're trying to build a squad, not dismantle one, and youngsters like Taylor and N'Zogbia are the future."

Taylor has attracted interest after some commanding displays since establishing himself back in the Newcastle defence following his recovery from surgery on a dislocated shoulder last season.

Roeder and assistant Nigel Pearson have worked closely with Taylor and, while the former defenders insist he is still learning, the Newcastle boss is adamant Taylor's future lies on Tyneside.

"There is no chance of Taylor leaving this club while I am manager," insisted Roeder.

With Oguchi Onyewu ineligible to play in Europe, Taylor will play an increasingly key role in Newcastle's assault on the Uefa Cup.

Newcastle's players were given the weekend off ahead of their second leg tie with AZ Alkmaar in Holland.

The Magpies take the cushion of a two-goal lead to Holland, knowing a clean sheet will take them through to the quarter-finals.
