Hammers order Taxi for Maxi

West Ham will lock horns with Real Betis in January's transfer window in a bid to sign out-of-favour Barcelona striker Maxi Lopez on loan.

The Argentine forward, who scored against Chelsea in last year's Champions League quarter-final, is struggling to get first-team opportunities at the Nou Camp.

And Hammers chief Alan Pardew reportedly hopes to snap the 21-year-old up on loan when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.

Lopez cost the Catalan giants £8m from River Plate last season but has so far played one game as a substitute in this campaign - mainly due to the form of Samuel Eto'o.

The Argentinian, who has hopes of being involved in the 2006 World Cup, has also interested Spanish side Betis but Barcelona would rather see Lopez loaned out to the Premiership.

West Ham's assistant boss Peter Grant admitted on Wednesday that Pardew was embarking on a European scouting mission this week as the hunt for reinforcements continues.

"With the window closed we are looking at players who are available. Alan had in his mind he wanted to bring quality in rather than quantity and that is what we have tried to do since we got promoted," said Grant.

"He is going to a couple of European games in different countries over the next two days. This is an ideal opportunity to see players in the flesh."

Grant also reinforced speculation that they were in the hunt for a top striker, adding: "You never have enough good strikers because goals will keep you in the division."

im not sure about him, but its only 21 years old!!!!

I fail to see why west ham still want strikers.

They are doing well in the league and well have imho some decent strikers already....

Maxi Lopez would be a gamble. They seem to be sniffing around the top strikers in the championship. I wouldn't be suprised to see an increased bid for A.J.

I cant see Simon Jordon wanting to sell AJ and espically to West Ham. So i think they will gamble on him.
