Expectancies strongly shape our perception of the world and preconceptions about stimulus characteristics can even bias the sensory system for illusory percepts. The sizing used by manufacturers is not consistent between manufacturers, and sometimes isn't even consistent within a line. When I was a teenager, I used to do some modeling for a local department store… I consistently wore size 12 patterns at the time. When I was modeling stuff from the expensive collections, the tags usually read 2, 4, or 6. When I was modeling the budget lines, it was anywhere from 6 to 16. It's actually gotten worse since then. In general, most folks wear 2-4 pattern sizes larger than their moderate priced ready to wear.
Choose pattern sizes by your actual measurements, not by your ready to wear size.
